Creativity: A Way To Cope With Strong Feelings Of Loss A nurse who participated in one of our recent grief counseling workshops shared her method for bringing comfort to parents who have experienced the death of their infant. This message is given to them along with a picture and other mementos which may be available. She explained that doing the writing and artwork on the card has been therapeutic, and necessary, for her as she deals with her own feelings of loss in such situations. Dear Mommy and Daddy, Though I am gone from your view do not mistakenly think I am gone from you. I am here with you, even now as I am thinking. Surprised? Follow my thoughts and allow me to explain. Even though I became "real" to you only as I was born into this world, in essence my reality existed long before this. In fact, You were My essence. I was your happy thoughts, your loving thoughts. I was "you" longing for a greater and higher expression of love and being. Yours was the dream that birthed me from the world to this. What a glorious transition that was! All those months that you nourished my "self" inside you, lavished me with your attention, your hope and even your aspirations. Each day was ours to fill and share. You laughed and I smiled, you ate and I grew, you slept and I rested, too. Even when you talked, I listened. You created a world of bliss for me that is difficult to describe. I only do so now because you are saddened and once again I am affected. I am saddened for you. I rest now in perfect peace and I see much that is hidden from your view. Do not confine my identity to an earthly body. I am freer and larger than that. I always have been. To become more real to you I became confined within a tiny frame. Now, I find myself again unbound and completely free. My scope is limitless, yet I find myself drawn to you. This time to comfort you, to share with you, to lend the best of myself to you. If you can feel a sense of peace with me--accept it. This is my gift to you--just like in the beginning. I am your happy thoughts I am your loving thoughts I am myself... at home within you I love you. Dolly Guess-Colvin R.N.
